Cause Of Stretch Marks – What Are Some Of The Common Causes Of Stretch Marks?
Yes, they are called “stretch marks” for a reason. The dermis (middle layer of skin) tears because it doesn’t have enough elasticity and support to counter too much growth too fast. Perhaps the cause has less to do with the actual stretching of the skin than the hormonal changes that happen during times the marks occur. In whatever way the skin and the hormones fit together to cause those (typically) red lines that constitute stretch marks, there are some very predictable times you can expect them to appear.
1) Pregnancy. How many jokes have you heard that are NOT about pregnancy? I thought not. Pregnancy is the social source of stretch mark humor – when you are able to laugh at them.
2) Puberty. It’s a growth spurt. Unpredictable, rapid and sudden. Hormones are raging, the skin is stretching. The mix of hormones and growth will almost always cause the red jagged marks. How could you not expect the jagged marks during this time? On the back (usually guys), on the legs, on the thighs – the crimson marks are not just for the stomach.

3) Muscle madness. I won’t bother to say it’s a bad idea to us “something extra” to give you bulging muscles. If you are bulging your muscles, you know exactly what I mean. I will say that if you force those big, beautiful muscles to grow too large too quickly, prepare to watch the ugly red lines come with it.
4) Weight gain. In pregnancy, the weight gain is expected, relatively sudden, and generally recommended to be between twenty-five to thirty-five pounds (though one study recommends no more than thirty-one.) In everyday life, the weight gain is supposed to be reasonable, moderate and healthy. Many times, it is none of the three. If you gain weight rapidly, expect to deal with stretch marks.
Here’s the good news. The marks are not health hazards, and they do fade with time. That might not be much comfort if you want to lie at the pool without exposing the red lines on your abdomen. For that, there are creams and lotions on the market specifically made to fade the red marks, and medical treatments available to eliminate stretch marks. Do compare the various products and consult your dermatologist on the various treatments – and do check your pocket book if you plan to take the medical route. Whatever put those stretch marks on you, you don’t have to leave them there.
