Organic Facial Products – Looking Beyond The Label At Some Uncomfortable Truths
What is your definition of organic facial products? One definition could be that all the ingredients used have been derived and sourced from plants, trees, seeds and flowers. Then, in the processing, they have not been mixed with nasty chemicals or even subjected to high temperatures. In other words, the impact on our delicate environment is hardly noticeable. Once we have this guarantee we can be fairly safe in the knowledge that what we are putting on our skin is reasonably safe.
The bad news is that this is by no means an easy task, given the carelessness and the exploitation of consumers in the skincare industry. This is quite frankly risky for our health and a public scandal. That is why we have non profit organisations such as The Compact For Safe Cosmetics and the EWG (Environmental Working Group) working with great dedication to try and raise consumer awareness of the dangers.
Before we look at what is actually in organic facial products, let us look at the general line up at the moment in about 90% of skin care products. It is not a pretty picture by any means.
The first problem is that the skin itself absorbs and also excretes various toxins and liquids. Actually, for every square inch of skin, there are about 100 sebaceous glands and 65 hairs. These are the agents our skin uses to absorb liquids, creams and, of course, toxins every day which will end up in the bloodstream and will not be necessarily completely excreted.

The FDA is in denial about this whole procedure because they would have to take responsibility for thousands of products if they were to acknowledge that cosmetics are medicinal substances in that the epidermis can indeed absorb various elements. As we know, medicine patches applied to the skin are used to do just that!
Now, as the skin can absorb certain ingredients, we just have to find the right ones and avoid all the nasty synthetic chemicals which can, in the long term, do a lot of harm. Just imagine rubbing parabens, chemicals of various sorts every day into over 80% of our skin. As you can see that will build up and it has been calculated by some experts that women can absorb up to 5lbs of all these chemicals in just one year!
The main ones to avoid are the following:-
ammonia which can cause asthma, among other things
formaldehyde
triclosan
parabens
any ingredient ending in DEA, TEA or MEA.
Propylene glycol which is an immune toxicant
We should not be fooled either when we are told that these are derived from some natural substance because it is much more probable that the quantity is actually minuscule. The rest is probably made up of a chemical cocktail.
Which are the organic ingredients we should look for?
If we look at the National Skincare Authority website, we can get a good idea of what we should be seeking.
We should make sure that the label has some or all of the following and that they are there in active quantities.
organic seed butters such as shea butter
jojoba oil
avocado oil
grapeseed oil
olivem 800
chamomile
These are the key ingredients in organic facial products and when we combine these with alga such as wakame and a remarkable nano form of CoQ10, then we really are on the way to much safer skincare. Once we have done our homework, we need never worry again about what is lurking in skincare products.
