Should I Get Laser Teeth Whitening?
Laser teeth whitening is considered to be the most effective and fastest way to whiten teeth. Also, results last much longer than other more conventional methods of whitening teeth. This procedure must be done by a dental professional. The procedure can be expensive, costing $500 to $1,000. However, your teeth can get 8 to 10 shades lighter.
Laser whitening is also known as light accelerated bleaching or power whitening. Teeth whitening using laser technology begins with the dentist cleaning the teeth. This step is necessary because the presence of plaque and germs can hinder the whitening process. The lips and gums are isolated using a resin-based barrier before starting the laser procedure.
This is to ensure that the soft tissue does not get burned. A whitening gel containing a high dental grade oxidizing agent such as hydrogen peroxide is applied on the teeth. Once the gel is completely applied on all teeth areas, the teeth where gel has been applied is exposed to laser light.
Three sources of light may be used in this procedure: plasma arc, LED, or halogen lighting. Most dentists prefer the use of halogen light because it gives optimal light at the right part of the spectrum. The blue light spectrum is found to be the most effective for teeth whitening without overheating or damaging the pulp of the tooth. If the intensity is too low, the light will not penetrate enough. On the other hand, too high intensity can cause damage. This is one of the reasons why the treatment must only be done by a qualified and experienced dentist.
Depending on the extent of staining, the oxidizing agent is exposed to halogen light for 6 up to 15 minutes. The halogen light activates and accelerates the oxidation process. Because of the light source, bleaching or whitening of the teeth takes place faster than it normally would. One-time treatment with laser teeth whitening can keep the teeth white for at least one year. However, tobacco and dark beverages such a coffee and tea may cause the teeth to become discolored again.
People whose teeth are extremely discolored may require more than one session to achieve the desired whiteness. However, a repeat treatment must be done only after consultation with the dentist. Also, this treatment is not recommended for everyone as the dentist must check the dental health of the individual before performing the procedure.
Laser teeth whitening is an expensive dental treatment but the cost may vary from dentist to dentist. And while the result is long-lasting, it is not permanent. Patients who undergo this procedure are advised to avoid foods or drinks that are likely to stain the teeth. Smoking should also be avoided. In addition, the teeth become sensitive to hot or cold items after the procedure but these symptoms are temporary and will go away within a few days.
