If only slightly more than half of the participants in an expensive, focused, well-organized stop smoking cessation program like the Center for a Smoke-Free Life are successful at quitting, what are the odds you will be able to quit without participating in this type of program?
I smoked 3 to 4 packs of cigarettes every day for 20 years. During that time, I tried to quit smoking lots of times. But, of all the times I tried to quit, I only tried one stop smoking program… Smokenders. We met in a classroom once every week for maybe 7 or 8 weeks. Of course, it was an instructor-led program that was fairly expensive at the time (maybe $400 or $500). We listened and discussed and learned until the 4th meeting. That was the meeting we were all scheduled to quit. So, we had three weeks of preparation about the benefits of stopping smoking as well as stop smoking methods before we actually quit smoking cigarettes.
As I recall, the process was relatively painless and made a lot of sense. I certainly learned how to stop smoking cigarettes. And it was great… while it lasted. I was driving to work six months later in the middle of winter. It was really cold (it might have been snowing) so I stopped at a convenience store for a cup of coffee.
