Stress Relief – 3 Top Tips For Personal Happiness
Stress comes from all quarters these days. In today’s information overloaded society we are bombarded with stories of war, famine, tsunamis, epidemics and financial crises and so on, on top of all the personal stress we already have in our everyday lives! All this information comes to us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. And for the most part, there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. No wonder we’re the most stressed we have ever been!
And everyone has their own personal preferred stress busting techniques. But you can’t take everyone’s advice! Being pulled in as many different directions as people you ask will only leave you overwhelmed and more stressed out than you were before.
So what can you do? Here are three top tips to help you overcome stress.
1. Make Quiet Time for Yourself Each Day
Find a quiet time each day to reflect on your inner thoughts and feelings. This needn’t be long. Even 15 minutes can make a difference. Use this quiet time to ask yourself what you are actually feeling stressed about. Often the answer will just well up inside you. You might find that you are actually stressed about something different from what you thought. Giving yourself this quiet “you” time will help you focus.
2. Don’t Be Afraid To Hold Your Own Opinion
You will be unhappy, unfulfilled and stressed if you compromise your own beliefs to match someone else’s opinion, even if that someone else is your beloved partner! So give yourself permission to hold your own opinion. Just because your best friend thinks that yoga is the best form of stress relief doesn’t mean you should agree with her – especially if you get all hot and bothered just trying to get into the positions! You’re not going to convince her she’s wrong. What works for one person, doesn’t work for another. Agree to differ and find what works for you.
3. Decide to Be Yourself
Do not try to be all things to all people. One of the biggest blocks to personal happiness is the stress of trying to be someone you are not. Are your parents pushing you to retrain as a lawyer? Do you feel the pressure to home bake that perfect cake for the school fete simply because everyone else is? Take a step back and realise that if you are a square peg, you will never fit comfortably into a round hole even if you file all the corners off! It’s fine to be you.
Take time to listen to your inner self. Decide to live your life your way. Your stress levels will fall and you will be happier and more fulfilled.
